Minimum Edge Distance1 1/4"(Center of hole to edge)
AISC Table J3.4 Guide
Sheared vs. Rolled Edges
AISC requires larger edge distances for sheared edges because the shearing process can create micro-cracks in the steel, making the edge weaker.
Sheared: Edges created by a crop shear or punch. Common on clip angles and gusset plates.
Rolled or Cut: Edges that are Thermally Cut (Plasma/Laser), Saw Cut, or the natural Rolled edge of a beam flange/channel toe. These are smoother and stronger, allowing for a tighter edge distance.
Oversized Holes
Table J3.4 values are for Standard Holes. If you are using Oversized holes (e.g., for anchor bolts or adjustability), AISC Table J3.5 requires you to add an increment to the edge distance (typically 1/8" or more) to ensure there is enough net steel area.
