Joist Terminology & Standards

Nomenclature (e.g., 16K4)
  • 16: Total depth of the joist in inches.
  • K: Series designation (K = Standard, LH = Longspan).
  • 4: Chord section number. Higher numbers indicate heavier, stronger top and bottom chords.
Standard Seat Depths
  • K-Series: Standard bearing seat depth is 2.5 inches.
  • LH-Series: Standard bearing seat depth is 5.0 inches (Note: extremely heavy LH chord sections 18-25 use a 7.5" seat, but are rarely used in standard PEMB/Commercial construction).
