AISC Weld Guide
Basic Calculations (E70XX)
The strength of a linear fillet weld is based on the effective throat area (0.707 × size). For standard E70 electrodes:
- Unit Strength: A 1/16" leg weld has an allowable strength (ASD) of 0.928 kips per inch.
- Example: A 3/16" weld is 3 × 0.928 = 2.78 kips/in.
Transverse Loading Bonus
Per AISC J2.4, welds loaded perpendicularly (90°) to the weld axis are stronger than welds loaded longitudinally.
- Equation: Fnw = FEXX × (1.0 + 0.50 × sin1.5θ)
- 90° Load: Provides a 50% increase in nominal strength compared to parallel loading.
